  • My name is John Shulli. I was born and raised here in Wilmington, graduated from John Dickinson High School, and attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona. Upon graduation, I was commissioned into the Army and spent the last 26 years in the Army and DoD – 22 of them overseas.

I’ve commanded a logistics brigade of 1800 Soldiers and in DoD managed a $10m Government Research Effort in Europe. I’m currently a Colonel in the Army Reserves, teaching at Army War College. For my day job, I’m a civilian at the Pentagon working on Artificial Intelligence policy and managing a $20m data management project. I’m no stranger to leading large efforts.

Now that I'm back home, I want to engage in our community, especially in our schools, which desperately need our attention. That's why I'm running for School Board – to prioritize our students and improve their education. To accomplish this, I believe the school board should:
    • Focus on education – NOT politics.
    • Provide parents with more choice and transparency, and
    • Attract and retain top teachers through career advancement opportunities.

It will be an honor to serve and make a positive impact on our children's future in our community.

  • Candidate Questions

  • I think Dr. Ben Carson said it best on what is equity, "There has been a subtle shift in the conversation: Its focus has moved from equality to equity. That is, instead of pursuing the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ideal of judging people by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin, equity would reward and punish people because of the color of their skin. Rather than equality of opportunity, equity would mandate equality of outcome. This goal is not only un-American — it is impossible to attain."

  • I would ensure all students get equal resources to achieve academic success and assign additional resources for students with special needs.

  • Delaware in the 70s used busing to desegregate schools – it only succeeded in breaking urban communities apart from their kids and causing undo harm. The best solution is to reestablish the City of Wilmington’s school district so communities can rebuild. We can apply massive funding and energy to build new schools as necessary and apply community revitalization approaches to heal the community. The result is urban students who can compete equality with any other student globally.

  • Give teachers the legal and moral top cover to discipline their students as they see fit and allow security personnel’s presence to give students a sense of safety. School shooting in Florida would have been avoided if security personnel where stationed in the school.

  • Let’s not make educating our children difficult – focus on reading, writing, and math as we did with putting man on the moon. The students we educated back then did it without electronic calculators so I’m sure we can educate today’s students without unnecessary politics in the classroom.

  • No, change to read, "All students are welcome to receive an education."

By labeling students you divide them - we need unity, not division in order to grow and educate our children.

  • I would ensure all students get equal resources to achieve academic success and assign additional resources for students with special needs.

  • Give teachers the legal and moral top cover to discipline their students as they see fit and build/re-build a community's connection with their school and children. The community is best positioned to fix social these issues.

  • No. Globally, the language of business is English. Children need a strong grasp of the English language to excel in a global market place. If not, other graduates in America or from overseas with excellence English skills will be hired over our children who do not have these skills.

  • We need more teachers - period. Hire the person who meets the standard and get them in front of students.

We do not have the right to hire teachers based on the color of their skin, sex, or sexual orientation - that is discrimination and is against the law.

  • I am flat footed to be asked such a basic heath emergency question. Fix the the problem and move on!
